Does Summer Affect Rhinoplasty Recovery? What Pasadena Patients Should Plan For

Does Summer Affect Rhinoplasty Recovery? What Pasadena Patients Should Plan ForRhinoplasty patients often ask whether the season matters for scheduling their surgery—and the answer is: yes, somewhat, but probably not in the ways you expect. Summer is a perfectly viable time to have rhinoplasty, and for many patients—particularly those with flexible work schedules or those who are between academic years—it can be an ideal window. Dr. Eric Yavrouian, a double board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon serving Pasadena, Glendale, and Burbank, CA, helps patients plan their rhinoplasty timing with a full understanding of how summer affects the recovery experience.

The Rhinoplasty Recovery Timeline: A Quick Overview

Understanding summer rhinoplasty recovery starts with understanding the baseline recovery timeline:

  • Days 1–7: Nasal splint in place. Bruising and swelling around the eyes and nose. Rest at home.
  • Week 2: Splint removed. Most bruising fading. Returning to work and social activities is possible—with some swelling still visible.
  • Weeks 3–4: Socially presentable for most patients. Residual swelling visible to the patient but not dramatically obvious to others.
  • Months 1–3: Swelling continues to resolve. Shape is becoming visible and refined.
  • Months 6–12: Final result becomes fully apparent, particularly in the nasal tip, which swells longest.

Summer-Specific Considerations for Rhinoplasty Recovery

Sun and UV Exposure

The single most important summer consideration for rhinoplasty patients is sun protection. The nasal skin is photosensitive during healing, and UV exposure can cause permanent pigmentation changes in the tissue and in the columellar scar (the small incision at the base of the nose in open rhinoplasty). For the first twelve months following surgery, any time the nose will be exposed to sun, broad-spectrum SPF 50+ and a wide-brimmed hat are essential.

Heat and Swelling

Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, which can temporarily increase swelling. Pasadena summers are warm—temperatures regularly reach the 90s°F. Patients should plan to spend more time indoors during peak heat hours, particularly in the first four to six weeks when swelling is most active. Air conditioning is a post-rhinoplasty patient’s best friend in summer.

Sunglasses: The Summer Complication

This is the rhinoplasty summer recovery factor that surprises patients most. Traditional sunglasses that rest on the nasal bridge cannot be worn for at least six weeks following rhinoplasty—the weight and pressure can affect the healing cartilage and bone structure. In a Los Angeles summer, not wearing sunglasses feels nearly impossible. Solutions include contact lenses plus a wide-brimmed hat, clip-on lenses that hang from the forehead, or very lightweight frames taped to the forehead.

Outdoor Activity

Strenuous exercise, contact sports, and activities with risk of nasal impact should be avoided for four to six weeks. Most summer recreational activities—swimming, hiking, light outdoor exercise—can resume by week six. Swimming is generally cleared at four to six weeks once the incisions are fully closed.

Advantages of Summer Rhinoplasty

Despite the summer-specific considerations, there are real advantages to scheduling rhinoplasty in summer:

  • Students and educators can use the academic break to recover without missing work or school
  • Social schedules can be more flexible—easier to take a week off without major professional obligations
  • The recovery falls during a time when casual, at-home activities are socially acceptable
  • Results will be significantly visible by fall and largely complete by the following summer
