Recovery After Rhinoplasty: What Patients Should Expect

Recovery After Rhinoplasty: What Patients Should ExpectRhinoplasty recovery is a gradual process that unfolds over several months. While many patients feel well relatively quickly, understanding the recovery timeline helps set realistic expectations and reduces anxiety during healing. Dr. Eric Yavrouian provides rhinoplasty to patients in Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Greater Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding communities.

The First Week After Surgery

During the first week, swelling, bruising around the eyes, and nasal congestion are common. A nasal splint is typically worn to protect the nose and support healing.

Most patients take one week off work and focus on rest, head elevation, and following postoperative instructions closely.

Splint Removal and Early Healing

The nasal splint is usually removed around one week after surgery. At this stage, much of the visible bruising has improved, though swelling remains.

Patients often feel more comfortable returning to light activities and social settings after splint removal.

Weeks Two to Four

Swelling continues to decrease gradually, especially around the bridge of the nose. The nasal tip may still feel firm or numb, which is normal.

Most patients return to work, exercise lightly, and resume daily routines with surgeon approval.

Months One to Three

By this stage, the nose begins to look more refined, though subtle swelling remains, particularly in the tip. Breathing continues to improve as internal tissues heal.

Patients may feel confident with their appearance, even though final results are still developing.

Long-Term Healing and Final Results

Final rhinoplasty results continue to evolve for up to a year or longer. Swelling resolves slowly, especially in patients with thicker skin.

As tissues settle, the nose achieves its final shape, with improved definition and balance.

Supporting a Smooth Recovery

Following postoperative instructions, avoiding trauma to the nose, and attending follow-up appointments are essential for optimal healing.

Patience is key. Rhinoplasty results improve over time, and gradual changes are part of the normal healing process.
