Open Rhinoplasty Procedure Steps

Open Rhinoplasty Procedure StepsRhinoplasty cosmetic surgery procedure can be performed using closed or open surgical techniques. Open rhinoplasty is usually recommended if significant tissue modification is involved or functional corrections and reconstructive nose surgery are required.

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will explain the steps involved in open rhinoplasty procedure to the patient.

Some surgeons may also present photographs or a video of the open rhinoplasty procedure so that the patient has a clear idea of what the surgery entails. Such patients will often have more confidence about the procedure and will be able to make better decisions. Pragmatic, wise, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Eric Yavrouian provides open rhinoplasty to patients in Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Greater Los Angeles, Beverly Hills CA, and surrounding communities.

Consultation Process

The first key step in open rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery is a detailed consultation with the patient. The patient should be ready to proactively participate in the consultation process because this will create the foundation for a successful surgery. The patient will have an opportunity to ask questions and clear any doubts and concerns about the procedure.

The surgeon will determine the patient’s candidacy for an open rhinoplasty, and discuss their incision preferences. They will assess the patient’s facial and nasal anatomy, skin type and amount of bone and cartilage available to make the desired changes to the nose. The surgeon will also explain the advantages and limitations of open rhinoplasty technique, and help the patient make a well-considered choice.

This is the chance for the patient to ask some salient questions. This is when full transparency needs to be practiced by both sides. Any patient should have questions thought out ahead of time so when this meeting is over with they can walk away with substantial information. Perhaps the patient could even record the conversation with the surgeon and any clinical staff’s permission of course.

Any patient who is planning on sitting down during this consultation is going to want to focus on what they are being told and make sure that surgeon understands the questions they are asking.

Customized Surgical Plan

The focused and profound surgeon will incorporate the data about the patient’s nasal structure and their personal aesthetic needs and goals to create a customized rhinoplasty surgery plan. The patient’s medical condition and previous nose surgeries, if any, will also be taken into account.

The surgeon’s goal will be to minimize the incisions, and perform the open surgery in with minimal risk and discomfort for the patient. The type of anesthesia to be used and the choice of surgical venue will also be discussed with the patient to arrive at the best decisions.

Surgical Procedure

Anesthesia

Open rhinoplasty may be performed with the patient under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with light sedation. The patient will not feel any pain or discomfort in either case, and will have no recollection of the procedure when they are brought out of anesthesia after the surgery.

Surgery

In case of open rhinoplasty, the surgeon will create an external incision discreely along the columella, and few small incisions within the nostrils. Through the incisions, they will add, remove or modify nasal tissue, cartilage and bone.

Depending on the patient’s requirements for nose augmentation, reduction or reconstruction, the surgeon may perform cartilage grafting or use silicone implants to create the new shape of the nose. Minor external scar will occur in the thin strip that divides the columella, but it will be largely inconspicuous.

Incision Closure

The surgeon will close the incisions with sutures once the procedure is completed. Nasal packing and a splint may be placed for a few days. Facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Yavrouian receives patients from Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, Greater Los Angeles, Beverly Hills CA, and other neighborhoods and cities across the horizon for rhinoplasty.
